Sunday Mornings for Children

We warmly invite you and your children to join us on Sunday mornings for a time of spiritual enrichment and fun.

Visiting for the first time?

Please feel free to contact Ashley Martinage, the Director of Faith Formation, if you have any questions or if you would like to arrange a time to familiarize yourself with our buildings before coming to worship for the first time. On Sunday morning, feel free to ask an Usher or Greeter to introduce you to her before the worship service.

Infants and Toddlers

Child care for infants and toddlers is provided by trained professionals on Sundays from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. during the summer. Our well-equipped nursery is located in Room 104 on the lower floor of the Hunter Education Building.  We utilize a parent pager system, so you can be reached if necessary.  Beginning at age 3, children are welcome to transition from the nursery to the Pre-K class.

Preschool through Fifth Grade

We offer Sunday School during our 11:00 a.m. service during the school year, and during our 10:00 a.m. service in the summer. In the summer, we have classes for preschool-5th grades; youth in grades 6 and up remain in worship or may volunteer to assist with Sunday school.

Children begin worship in the Sanctuary with their families.  Following the “For the Child in All of Us” time, they exit the Sanctuary through the front transept door closest to the piano and go to their classes in the Hunter Building, which is connected to the Sanctuary.  Rooms in the 100 series are on the 1st floor; those in the 200 series are on the 2nd floor. Children may be met in their classrooms following the service.

Rock Spring uses the SHINE curriculum.  It encourages imaginative, interactive biblical storytelling; explores the meaning of the Bible within the gathered class community; helps children cultivate the inner life of the Spirit through spiritual practices; emphasizes peacemaking and service; provides interesting, engaging activities; and encourages reflection and wondering.  You can learn more about SHINE at their website.

Classes are grouped by age/grade.  Groupings are flexible.  If you have questions about which class is right for your child, please speak with Ashley Martinage.

Communion

Rock Spring celebrates communion on the first Sunday of every month.  On those Sundays, children in Preschool through 5th grade will go to Sunday School as usual, but will return to the Sanctuary to share in communion with their family.  All are welcome at the Table.

Summer Sunday School Teachers
Posted: Jun 2 2017 - 9:31am

During the summer months, Rock Spring has two Sunday School classes for children in Preschool-1st grade and 2nd-5th grades. The summer curriculum is called An Illustrated Compassion, and focuses on compassion stories in the Bible. We schedule teachers and teacher assistants on a week-to-week basis, making this an excellent time to try out Sunday School teaching without a big commitment. Interested? Do you have an empty seat in your car on Sunday mornings?  Would you like to fill that seat with another Rock Springer who could use a ride to church?

The reality is that I too have

Authored your pain.

I laid a blank piece of paper down

When you needed me to respond.

I chose the shortcut.

I learned complicity,

Learned to move quietly in my privilege,

Learned to let the doors open for me

Before walked inside.

I inherited fear

And did not unlearn it.

In fight or flight, I flew.

I confess all this.

And I commit to hearing

The raw stories,

To letting your vulnerability

Chafe me.
