Movie Nights Feature Films about Life in Palestine
When: Wednesday, July 25 and Thursday, August 23, 7:00 p.m.
This summer the Rock Spring Global Missions Committee, in partnership with the Voices From the Holy Land film series and with support from the Board of Christian Education, will present two films aimed at helping people learn about what life is like in Palestine.
The first film, which will be presented on Wednesday, July 25 is Life In Occupied Palestine. Amazon describes the film as being “a wonderfully moving introduction” to the life of Palestinians “in simple, everyday terms, with a captivating narration by eyewitness Anna Baltzer,” a Jewish-American Columbia graduate and Fulbright scholar who is the granddaughter of Holocaust refugees. Ms. Baltzer has appeared on television more than 100 times, including on The Daily Show, and has lectured at more than 500 universities, schools, churches, mosques, synagogues, and policy institutes on six continents.
The second film, to be presented on Thursday, August 23 is Al Helm: Martin Luther King in Palestine. It chronicles the story of an African-American gospel choir that travels to the Holy Land with Dr. Clay Carson, Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Institute, to help perform his play about Dr. King. Dr. Linda Hess of Stanford University’s Department of Religious Studies describes the film as being “utterly unique. It shows artists meeting across worlds, it refracts the fierce and appalling political situation through the lenses of theater; it weaves together threads of suffering and courage, political activism and artistic creation; and it creates revelatory conversations between African Americans and Palestinians. Al Helm shows the power of art and is, in itself, a work of art.”
Following each film there will be an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the film, suggest possibilities for future programs, and discuss how Rock Spring might work to bring about peace in the region. The movies will be shown in the Saegmuller Room and light refreshments will be served.
