Interim Senior Pastor: Rev. Dr. Douglas L. Griffin

The Reverend Dr. Douglas L. Griffin (”Doug”) is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ (UCC). He holds standing in the Potomac Association and is a member of Lincoln Congregational Temple UCC in Washington, DC. He is an intentional interim minister, a specialized ministry to congregations and church-related institutions during times of transition to new leadership.

Doug spent several years in health care chaplaincy after graduation from seminary in 1979. He served as chaplain in both hospital and retirement home setttings. In 1993, Doug earned a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America in Religion and Culture. His major concentration was in Religion and Health Care.

Doug was born in Martinsburg, WV, in 1952, but spent most of his youth in the Maryland suburbs of Washington. He resides in Germantown, MD, with his wife Susan Frey who works for the U. S. Department of Energy. They have two adult sons and a new daughter-in-law (since October, 2007).

Rev. Dr. Janet Parker came to Rock Spring in September 2005. She was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), but transferred her ministerial standing to the Potomac Association of the United Church of Christ after coming to Rock Spring. She received her M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1989 to serve a Taiwanese/Chinese UCC congregation in Staten Island, NY. Subsequently, she pastored two Presbyterian churches part-time while pursuing a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in New York, which she completed in 2001. Following the September 11th attacks, Janet served the Presbytery of New York City as Coordinator for Disaster Relief.

She taught Religion and Society for two years at Chicago Theological Seminary and was a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University’s Center for the Study of Religion prior to coming to Rock Spring. She served on an advisory team to the World Council of Churches Decade to Overcome Violence Initiative from 2002-2006. Janet has received three sermon awards from different organizations since coming to Rock Spring, for the sermons “From Apocalypse to Genesis”, “The Ties that Bind,” and “Noah’s Promise.”

Pastor for Children, Youth & Families : Rev. Henry E Fairman

Rev. Fairman and his wife Christina came to Rock Spring in November 2006. Growing up in Ohio and Michigan, Hank has served UCC congregations in Illinois and Michigan. A graduate of Chicago Theological Seminary and Michigan State University, Hank is a student of art history, religion, and philosophy.

From 1993-2000, Hank served on the Outdoor Ministries staff of the Ohio Conference, UCC. His work in camping continued in the Division of Outdoor Ministries of the Illinois Conference, UCC (1999-2003) and with Vision, Inc of the Michigan Conference, UCC (2003-2006). Hank’s passion for working with children and youth comes from this time of service.
