Fifth Sunday Lunch & Chat
For our July Fifth Sunday, we are saying “You are welcome here!” to refugees. We will have a connection with hospitality and refugees/immigrants in worship, then enjoy a lunch based on Syrian recipes. Afterwards, children will have a special refugee story/experiential activity, while the adults listen to Dr. Patricia Maloof of Catholic Charities speaking about refugee resettlement. The generations will then reunite and together we will assemble 50 refugee school kits for Church World Service. All are welcome to participate in the event. If you’d like to be involved in setting up the meal, children’s activities, and/or school supplies, please let Laura know or speak with Margaret Miller, Rick Hale, or Mary Black.
Not familiar with Fifth Sundays? In every month that has a 5th Sunday, Rock Spring engages in an intergenerational, hands-on service project. Projects are designed to allow people of all ages and abilities to make a meaningful contribution. Fifth Sundays also include education and advocacy, and a time of shared fellowship and hospitality for the congregation.
Fifth Sunday leadership is shared, and is coordinated by Laura Martin. Anyone who is interested in helping to plan or organize a future Fifth Sunday can contact Laura. This is a wonderful opportunity to help engage the congregation on an issue about which you are passionate! For 2017, we will have two additional Fifth Sundays -- October 29 (Stop Hunger Now meal bagging) and December 31 (fellowship and organizing to participate in the MLK Day of Service in January).
