Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM)

OCWM monies support a vast array of national and international programs. These programs help hundreds of thousands of people in the United States with the basic needs of food, shelter and homelessness and also with the basic needs of food, shelter and homelessness and also help develop strong communities, justice ministries and demonstrate that all are welcomed into the United Church of Christ. Internationally, OCWM monies support 115 missionaries in over 85 countries providing worship and promoting health, wholeness and justice ministries. Funds also support the domestic work of the UCC and our Central Atlantic Conference.

Potomac Association

The Potomac Association is one of five Associations within the Central Atlantic Conference. The Potomac Association is the regional organization serving 30 United Church of Christ congregations in the greater Washington, DC, area, stretching north to Gaithersburg, MD, and south to Richmond and Chesterfield, VA.

The mission of the Potomac Association is to promote fellowship among churches and to support the calling and placement of ministers. The Association assists in the development of new churches; supports social action and mission projects, urban ministry, and campus ministry; stewardship and women’s programs.

The Association currently has fourteen seminary students “In Care” as they pursue their educational requirements. As graduates prepare for ministry in the church, the Association guides them, reviews their qualifications, and oversees ordination and installation. The Associate Conference Minister is Rev. Dr. Kwame Osei Reed.

Lancaster Theological Seminary (LTS)

LTS was founded in 1825 in Carlyle, PA, by members of the German Reformed Church in the United States to prepare prospective clergy and other church leaders. Today, LTS offers the Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Religion and Doctor of Ministry degrees.

LTS is one of seven seminaries of the United Church of Christ. Its students come from a variety of denominations. Support for the LTS ultimately means educating and strengthening Christian leaders. Lancaster graduates have a significant impact on the churches and communities in which they serve. Globalization has been a part of Lancaster Theological Seminary’s programs for over thirty years. This program emphasizes study outside the United States and the inclusion of a global perspective within the curriculum, faculty, and student body. Travel abroad is a requirement for the Master of Divinity Program.

Howard University School of Divinity

Founded in 1867 by members of the First Congregational Church in Washington, DC, Howard University School of Divinity is a graduate theological and professional school whose mission is to educate and empower leaders to serve the church and the world, to celebrate the religious and cultural heritage of African Americans and the African Diaspora and to engage in the pursuit of excellence in ministry, driven by a passion for justice and freedom and a relentless search for truth.

Shaw Community Ministry (SCM)

SCM, located in Washington, DC, is the social outreach program of the Potomac Association. Started as a Street Ministry, SCM is an established and prized presence in the Shaw neighborhood. Emphasis is on the transformation of lives through enrichment, with strong focus on youth including: after school and Saturday mentoring and tutorials; computer training; life skills and positive values programs; and, day and overnight camping trips. SCM also works with seniors and women in crisis.

Hoffman Homes for Youth

Hoffman Homes provides comprehensive psychiatric care, treatment and education to emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and their families in South Central Pennsylvania. Hoffman Homes is a not-for-profit, private corporation associated with the UCC and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a child and adolescent psychiatric treatment program. Hoffman Homes provides clinical, health-care, pastoral and educational services to its young residences.

Wellspring United Church of Christ

Wellspring is a new church start located in Centreville, VA. Its worship reflects the ecumenical roots of the UCC as well as the diverse backgrounds of the church’s members. A unifying theme is the covenant, which is reaffirmed each Sunday, during worship. Scripture is central to the worship service as new insights are sought which can be applied to everyday lives. The presence of the spirit is celebrated with upbeat and thoughtful sacred and secular music. Sunday services are held at the small white frame church at 13510 Lee Highway (Route 29.

UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns

The Coalition provides support and sanctuary to all our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender sisters and brothers, their families and friends; advocates for their full inclusion in church and society; and brings Christ’s affirming message of love and justice for all people.

The United Church of Christ Coalition for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns is officially recognized by the United Church of Christ as a related, self-created organization.

The work of The Coalition is focused on three primary areas:
• Creating and supporting Open and Affirming (ONA) settings within the United Church of Christ
• Supporting youth and young adults and those who work with them
• Local organizing and outreach
